Q:

A Christian friend keeps urging me to ask Jesus into my heart, but I if I did, how would I know He was really there? Would I feel different or something?

A:

Yes, you might feel different if you invited Christ into your life—but the real reason you would know He had come to live within you is because He has promised to do so. He has promised, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door (of their heart), I will come in” (Revelation 3:20).

When we come to Christ, however, He not only comes to live within us, but something even more important happens. When we commit our lives to Him and trust Him for our salvation, God forgives all our sins and makes us part of His family forever. Think of it: If you come to Christ, He will make you one of His children! The Bible says, “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

Will you have strong emotions if you give your life to Christ? Perhaps—but perhaps not. When I was a teenager, an evangelist came to our town, and one night I went forward to give my life to Christ. Others came also, and some of them obviously had deep feelings about what they were doing. I didn’t, however, and I even wondered if something was wrong with me. But down inside, I knew Christ had forgiven me and come to live within me.

In other words, don’t trust your feelings because they can come and go. Instead, trust Christ, and trust God’s promises to save you. Don’t delay giving your life to Him.
