Q:

Do you think religion might be in danger of going out of existence some day? I suppose you'll say no, and I agree with you, but sometimes I wonder because our society has become so secular and indifferent to God. Many people today don't even seem to think about God.

A:

Yes, our world is becoming more and more secular and materialistic. I can’t help but wonder if we are living in the last days of which the Bible spoke, when “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy” (2 Timothy 3:2).

But let me remind you of two great truths. First, God does not change, and neither do His plans. The Bible says, “I the Lord do not change” (Malachi 3:6). He is sovereign, and He is still in control of human history—and His plan for us will not be blocked. Satan will do all he can to stop God’s work—but in the end, God will win, not Satan. Jesus said that He would build His Church, “and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18, KJV). No matter what happens, God is still at work.

Second, human nature does not change. Down inside every one of us is an empty, hollow place that only God can fill. God made us for Himself, but as long as we turn our backs on Him, our lives will be empty and unfulfilled. We need God, and even the most hardened person has moments when he or she wonders if they are on the wrong road.

Don’t despair—God is still on His throne! Is your trust and confidence in Christ? Make sure of your commitment to Him, and then rejoice that some day His kingdom will come.
