I feel like I'm being torn in two directions. My boss wants to promote me to a new position in the company, and I'd like to take it because it pays more and has a bright future. But it also involves a lot of travel, and my family is very opposed to that. What should I do?

The most important thing you can do is seek God’s will as you make this decision. You only see a part of the picture—but God sees it all, and He knows what is best for you and your family.

And God not only knows what is best for you; He wants what is best! The reason is because He loves you, and He doesn’t want you to bring harm to yourself by heading down the wrong road in life. Nearly every day, I receive at least one letter from someone who’s done what they thought was best—but ignored God’s leading (or even openly rejected it), and has reaped a harvest of unhappiness and heartache ever since. Don’t let this happen to you! The Bible says, “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).

If you have never done so, turn to Christ and by faith ask Him to come into your life. He wants to forgive the past and give you hope and wisdom for the future. Then ask Him to direct you and help you know what is right.

In addition, don’t be misled by the attraction of prestige or money. They aren’t necessarily bad—but they can steal your heart and lead you astray if you aren’t careful. Jesus warned, “You cannot serve both God and Money” (Luke 16:13). God gave your family to you, and they should be your first priority.
