God loves us, and He yearns for us to turn to Him and have our sins forgiven so we can be with Him in heaven forever. Even if we only turn to Christ at the last minute, He still “is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

But your friend is playing a very dangerous game, and I sincerely hope he will stop and think about the path he is taking. After all, how does he know when he will die, and whether or not he will even have time to repent of his sins? Every year, thousands die almost instantly after car accidents or heart attacks or strokes; how does he know he won’t be one of them?

Your friend is also in spiritual danger for another reason: The older we get, often the more hardened our hearts get toward God. Like a hand that grows hard and calloused when it rubs against a tool, so our hearts grow cold and indifferent toward God. The Bible says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 4:7).

Pray for your friend; Satan has deceived him into thinking the Christian life is joyless and empty. But it isn’t true! Only Christ gives meaning to our lives, and only He gives us hope for the future. The Bible’s warning is true: “Now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).
