Ask God for the Faith to Look Beyond Tragic Miscarriage

I admit I'm angry at God, but I can't help it. My husband and I had looked forward very much to the birth of our first child (a son), but then I had a miscarriage and now all our dreams are shattered. Why did God do this to us?

I know this has been a very traumatic time for you and your husband, but has it ever occurred to you that God also knows what you’re going through, understands your feelings and sympathizes with your hurts? You may be angry at Him, but He isn’t angry at you. Instead, He loves you and wants to help you.

I don’t know why God allows things like this to happen; some day we’ll understand, but in the meantime we can only accept them and turn to God for the comfort and hope we need. And that’s what I pray you’ll do. After all, your anger accomplishes nothing; it doesn’t change the situation and won’t bring you any lasting comfort.

In fact, anger only brings a harvest of bitterness and despair into our souls. This is one reason why the Bible says, “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:26-27).

God loves you, just as He loved your unborn child. Ask Him for the faith to look beyond this tragedy, and to realize that He is still with you and wants to help you. Begin by turning to Jesus Christ and committing your lives and your future to Him. Remember: God knows what it is to lose a son—His only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave His life for our salvation. “May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise” (Psalm 119:76).
