Q:

Some people would say I'm old fashioned, I guess, but I get very alarmed at all the changes in our society, and the way immorality and greed have almost become normal. Do you think God is going to step in and judge us for the way we're living?

A:

Our society certainly has changed, and things that were once looked upon as shameful have become common. I often think of Jeremiah’s words concerning his own nation: “Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush” (Jeremiah 6:15).

But Jeremiah’s words didn’t stop there. He went on in the same verse to warn them that God’s judgment would surely come. He added, “‘So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them,’ says the Lord.” Those were sobering words—and they literally came true only a few years later when the nation was invaded and destroyed.

Yes, God is holy, and His Word is still true: “You may be sure that your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23). Sin is a direct denial of God, and some day sin will be judged—either in this life or the life to come. This applies to individuals and it applies to nations, as well. God has blessed us in many ways, but we must never assume that He will ignore our sins or pretend they don’t matter.

Our greatest need is to turn to God, repenting of our sins and seeking His forgiveness. Pray for our nation, that God will show us our need of Himself. And may this begin with you, as you give your life to Christ today.
