Q:

Do you think it does any good to pray for spiritual revival? I know that long ago there used to be periods of religious revival in our land, but I wonder if we'll ever see anything like that again.

A:

Several times in our history, strong waves of revival did sweep through our nation. Not only were large numbers of people converted to Christ, but our society was changed as believers attacked social ills like child labor and slavery.

Although most of these periods of revival occurred when our nation was much smaller, this doesn’t mean God is no longer at work. Although our society continues to grow more secular, more people also are coming to Christ than ever before. Only God knows what the future holds, but we should constantly pray for those around us who need Christ. The Bible says that God “is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Who knows what God might do if His people began to pray fervently for spiritual revival? Perhaps one reason Satan has gained such a hold on so many lives is because we don’t pray enough. Our prayer should be that of the Prophet Habakkuk: “I stand in awe of your deeds, O Lord. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known” (Habakkuk 3:2).

As you pray for others, however, also pray for yourself. Ask God to reveal any hidden sin in your life, and to cleanse you and renew your own commitment to Christ. Then ask Him to help you point others to Christ, who alone is “the light of the world” (John 8:12).
