Does God look down on poor people? Some of the so-called "Christians" I know sure do, and that kind of snobbery gets me very upset. Some of us were born poor, and it's not our fault that we've stayed poor even if we've worked hard all our lives.
A:
No, God doesn’t look down on poor people – not at all. In fact, the Bible says that God has a special concern for the poor, and so should we: “I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land” (Deuteronomy 15:11).
Remember: Jesus was poor, and so were most of the people He met every day. Think of it: God’s Son was born in a stable, and when He died they placed His body in a borrowed tomb. During His lifetime, Jesus accumulated no property; on one occasion, He pointed out that “foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Luke 9:58). Poverty was no disgrace to God’s only Son – nor should it be to us.
Snobbery has no place in the life of a true Christian – and I hope you won’t let the attitude of a few who don’t take Christ as seriously as they should keep you from Him. God loves us, and the most important truth I can tell you is that He accepts you just as you are, and He wants you to be part of His family. This is life’s greatest treasure – the treasure of knowing Christ. Open your heart to Him today.
