Q:

I didn't grow up going to church very much, but recently a friend of mine encouraged me to give my life to Jesus, and I did. What do I do now?

A:

I’m grateful you have given your life to Jesus Christ; it’s the most important decision you will ever make. Jesus said, “I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10).

What do you do now? First, thank God for what has happened to you. No matter what your past has been, your sins have been forgiven, and God Himself now dwells within you by His Spirit. More than that, God has adopted you into His family, and you are now His beloved child forever. The Bible says, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1).

Then make it your goal to grow closer to Christ every day. How do you do this? First, ask God to help you find a church where the Bible is taught and you can grow through your fellowship with other believers. In addition, make the Bible part of your life every day. Even a few verses will help you understand God’s love for you, and how He wants you to live. Make prayer a part of your life also. No matter what you are facing, you can commit it to God in prayer.

Remember: You now have a personal relationship with God Himself. Relationships grow stronger only if we spend time together — and the same is true with God. Put Christ first in your life, and spend time in His presence every day.
