Q:

I don't see how anyone can base their life on what the Bible says. After all, it was written thousands of years ago, and while it might have been useful to people in those days, we live in a totally different world and we know so much more than they did.

A:

It’s true that our world has changed over the centuries, and that we know much more than we once did—and I’m thankful for that! I wouldn’t want to go back to the days when electricity or modern medicine or a thousand other things we take for granted were unknown.

But have you ever thought about some of the things that have not changed over the centuries? For one thing, human nature has not changed. We may be better educated or more sophisticated—but our hearts are still full of greed and selfishness and pride (even if we don’t like to admit it). Over 2,500 years ago, the Bible said, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Those words could have been written yesterday, because our hearts haven’t changed.

Nor has God changed over the centuries. The Bible says, “I the Lord do not change” (Malachi 3:6). He was pure and holy when the Bible was written—and He still is. He loved us when He created the human race—and He still does. He loves us so much that He sent His Son into the world to die for our sins.

Don’t make the mistake of turning your back on Christ. You need His forgiveness, and you need His strength for daily living. In the midst of a constantly changing world, He alone brings us the lasting peace and security we need.
