Q:

I hope you won't think I'm a heretic or something, but I honestly don't have any desire to go to heaven. I am a Christian, and I believe in heaven, but I'm happy with my life right now and don't have any desire to see it come to an end. Am I wrong to feel this way?

A:

Your lack of interest in heaven may be understandable; I suspect many people feel the same way you do. Since my life is good (they think), why should I want it to end?

But I believe this is a wrong attitude for several reasons. For one thing, right now you are assuming your life is always going to be the way it is right now. But how will you feel when sickness or old age overtakes you, or something else happens that makes your life more difficult? Then heaven will become more precious to you, for it alone gives us hope for the future. But why wait until then to think about heaven?

I also suspect your idea of heaven may be too limited. Yes, this life has its joys (and they give us a hint of heaven’s joy). But if you could glimpse for even one second what heaven is really like, you’d have a deep yearning to go there. Heaven is far more glorious that anything we can ever imagine! The Bible says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Thank God every day for the good things He gives you—and most of all for your salvation. But ask Him also to help you focus on eternity. Someday this life will be over, but if we know Christ, we have “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4).
