Q:

I live in constant fear because my husband is in the military overseas and I'm afraid he'll never make it back. I pray and pray for him, but how do I know something bad won't happen to him anyway?

A:

As our nation celebrates Memorial Day, I thank God for all those who have safeguarded our freedom over the years through their military service. We owe people like your husband a great debt, and we especially remember on this day those who sacrificed their lives for freedom’s sake. The Bible says, “Give everyone what you owe him … if honor, then honor” (Romans 13:7).

My prayer is that God will give you His peace, even in the midst of your uncertainty and fear. Is this possible? Yes, it is, as you learn to trust everything into God’s loving hands. The Bible says, “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever” (Psalm 125:1).

You see, the most important truth I can tell you is that God loves you far more than you can ever imagine—and He loves your husband as well. He loves you so much that He was willing to send His only Son into the world to die in the greatest war of all—the war against sin and Satan. By His death and resurrection He purchased the greatest freedom of all: freedom from sin.

No, I can’t guarantee your husband will never experience harm—but when we know Christ, we are safe in His hands forever, no matter what happens. May you both discover this truth by committing your lives to Jesus Christ today. When we know Him, we know that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
