Q:

Twenty years ago, I lost control of my car while driving too fast on a rainy road, and a friend died in the accident. Maybe God can forgive me, but I'll never be able to forgive myself. Please warn people to be careful driving, because something like this stays with you the rest of your life.

A:

Auto accidents have become so much a part of our lives that we sometimes forget how devastating they are. Not every accident is preventable, of course—but many are, and we all have a responsibility to drive as carefully as possible.

You may never forget what happened on that rainy road 20 years ago—but God does not want you to go through life burdened with constant guilt and self-condemnation over it. These are like poisons that will contaminate your soul and cut off your joy, and also keep you from being the person God wants you to be. This is why I urge you to turn to God and give this burden to Him. The Bible says, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall” (Psalm 55:22).

How is this possible? It’s possible for one reason: Jesus Christ took the burden of your sins upon Himself when He died for you on the cross. He was sinless—but on the cross all your sins were placed on Him, and He died in your place. Think of it: He took the punishment you and I deserve, and now He freely offers us God’s full forgiveness. Open your heart to Him today.

Then ask God to help you see yourself as He sees you: fully forgiven. Let the Bible’s truth cleanse your mind and heart every day: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
