Q:

I must be the most disorganized person on earth. I start the day with all sorts of plans, then get sidetracked, and by the end of the day haven't gotten anything done. I don't think God wants us to be like this, does He?

A:

No, God doesn’t want us to go through life this way. That doesn’t mean we’re supposed to work all the time; God knows we need times of rest and relaxation. But God has work for us to do, and even the ordinary events of daily living are important to Him.

Let me make a couple of suggestions that might be helpful. First, make a list of the things you need to do every day, and keep it before you. Don’t be unrealistic; don’t write down everything you need to do that month! (If you do, you’ll only end up frustrated.) But put down the things you reasonably can do that day — and cross them off as you finish them.

In addition, take a few minutes to write down everything you do in an average day — sleeping, eating, working, shopping, watching television, surfing the Internet, etc. — and put down how much time you spend on each. Now look at this list. How much time do you spend on things that aren’t important, or may even be morally or spiritually harmful? Ask God to help you discipline your time. The Bible says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1).

The most important thing you can do, however, is to begin each day with God — reading your Bible, praying, and committing your day to Christ. When we know He walks with us, the temptation to waste time fades.
