Q:

I never have understood how Jesus could have been both God and man at the same time. Or is this what the Bible actually says? Maybe Jesus was just a very spiritual man who was completely dedicated to God.

A:

Jesus was a very spiritual man who was completely dedicated to God–but the Bible stresses that He was much more than that. The Bible tells us He was God in human flesh–fully man, but also fully God. It says that “In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9).

How was this possible? No matter how hard we try, our minds are too limited to understand it completely. Someday we will–but not now. And yet we can understand it in part–and when we do, we will realize that it is one of the most profound truths imaginable. Think of it: The One who created the universe and put the stars in place … the One who made us and watches over us … this One stooped down and became a man! He didn’t cease to be God when He did this–but part of Him took on human flesh, and God became a man.

But why did He do this? He did it because He loves us. He did it because He wanted us to know what He is like, and He did it so we could be reconciled to Him. By nature, we are separated from God because of our sins, but on the cross Jesus Christ–the perfect God-man–took upon Himself our sins and paid the price for our salvation.

Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus, who was God in human flesh. And when you do, you will realize just how much God loves you–and you will want to love Him in return.
