Q:

I saw one of those "infomercials" the other night on TV about someone who claimed to be able to talk to people who lived a long time ago and can give us guidance about our lives. Do you think that's possible? I admit I was tempted to call the number to see what she'd say.

A:

I’m glad you didn’t make that call—and I hope you won’t in the future. Even if it was advertised as a free call, you can be sure you would have been pressured to get more deeply involved later on—and at much greater cost.

But as I often say when I’m asked questions like this, at best you’ll end up simply throwing your money away. Those who claim to be able to predict the future often are only making guesses, and their predictions are either so general that they could mean anything, or else they turn out to be false. If you made decisions based on their advice, you easily could end up taking a wrong road in life.

But sometimes things like this can entangle you in occult spiritual forces that are opposed to God, and will lead you astray (or worse). The Bible warns, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness” (Ephesians 5:11). Those words, incidentally, were written to Christians who were living in a city that was filled with superstition and occult practices.

Instead, give your life to Jesus Christ, and trust your future into His hands. God loves you; He loves you so much that He sent His Son into the world to die for your sins. He wants to cleanse you of your sins and give you hope for the future. Put your life into Christ’s hands today. You’ll never regret it.
