Q:

I am a new Christian, and in the Bible study I'm going to they said something the other day about Jesus coming back to earth some day. Is this what the Bible teaches? If so, do you think people will treat Him the second time the way they treated Him the first time?

A:

The Bible clearly teaches that someday Jesus Christ will return to set up His Kingdom on earth. And unlike His first coming, He will return with power and glory, and He will rule over the entire earth.

The Bible repeatedly testifies to this great truth. Jesus Himself said, “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory” (Matthew 25:31). After He had ascended into heaven at the end of His ministry on earth, the angels told His disciples, “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Many other passages bear witness to this promise.

What difference should this make in our lives right now? First of all, it should give us hope. This world, with all of its sin and injustice and heartache, will be renewed by the power of God. The final word is with God, not with the devil!

In addition, the fact of Christ’s coming should give us a sense of urgency—a deep desire to serve God and tell others about His love. Someday this world as we know it will end—and then it will be too late for people to turn to Christ. Jesus said, “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work” (John 9:4).
