Q:

Does God give up on us sometimes? I'm afraid He has abandoned me, and I guess I can't blame Him because I know I've let Him down and been a big disappointment to Him. Is it too late to get things right?

A:

From God’s standpoint, it is never too late to turn to Him for the forgiveness we need–and the reason is because His love for us never changes, and He yearns to forgive us and welcome us into His family. Jesus said, “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away” (John 6:37).

But it can be different from our standpoint, because we can ignore God and turn our backs on Him so often that our hearts become cold and calloused. Just as a calloused hand becomes less and less sensitive, so a hardened, calloused heart becomes less and less sensitive to God. The person who is in the most danger spiritually is the one who deliberately ignores God and can no longer hear His voice. The Bible warns, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 4:7).

I believe God is working in your heart right now, calling you to repent and turn to Him; if He weren’t, you wouldn’t be writing me or asking this question. Don’t ignore Him any longer! No matter what your past has been, God wants to forgive you and come into your life to change you–beginning today.

What must you do? First, tell God you are sorry for your sins, and you want to turn from them. Then ask Christ to come into your heart to cleanse and save you, and then commit your life to Him. God’s promise is for you: “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18).
