Q:

I'm in a rehab program (alcohol) that encourages us to reach out to a "Higher Power" for help. But I don't really believe in a "Higher Power," and no one here can explain to me how to find one, either. If you could talk to me, what would you say?

A:

The first thing I’d tell you is that God loves you and wants you to have a personal, living relationship with Himself. I’d also say that the most important thing in life is to know God — because once you do, you’ll never be the same.

How can you know God? The key is to look in the right place for Him — and that “place” is Jesus Christ. You see, God has made Himself known to us in various ways, such as through the worlds He created or in our conscience. But the most important way God made Himself known was by coming down to earth and becoming a man: Jesus Christ. He was God in human flesh! The Bible says, “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him” (Colossians 1:19).

Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus Christ as He is revealed in the Gospels. When you do, you’ll realize that He loves you and wants to help you. He loves you so much that He was willing to give His life for you. The Bible says, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

By faith ask Jesus Christ to come into your life today — and He will. Then learn to walk with Him every day, as you pray, read your Bible and have fellowship with other believers. God bless you.
