Is it normal to think about death a lot? I have to admit I worry about dying, but when I told this to a friend not long ago he just laughed and said I ought to live for the moment and not worry about things like death that I can't do anything about. Is he right?
No, your friend is not right. Death is the greatest certainty any of us will ever face, and it doesn’t make sense to refuse to think about it.
At the same time, have you ever asked yourself why you think about death so much? The reason, I suspect, is because down inside you’re afraid to die because you know you aren’t prepared for death. After death, you will live on forever—either with God in heaven or apart from Him in the absolute loneliness of what the Bible calls hell. The Bible says, “Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
The most important thing I can tell you, however, is that you do not need to fear death! God loves you, and He has provided the way for all your sins to be forgiven and for you to go to heaven when you die. That way is Jesus Christ, who took upon Himself the judgment you and I deserve. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
By faith turn to Christ and trust Him alone for your salvation. When we know Christ, we don’t need to fear death any longer, because we know we belong to Him and He will take us to Himself when we die. Open your heart to Christ today, and He will help you conquer your fear of death.
