Q:

I feel like I'm at a crossroads in my life, and I don't want to make a mistake. The problem is, I've gone about as far as I can go in my present job, and I'm tempted to change careers while I'm still young enough to do it. But how will I know if it's the right decision?

A:

The most important advice I can give you or anyone else who’s facing a decision about their life is to seek God’s will for their future. Don’t make this decision by yourself—make it with God!

After all, doesn’t God know what is best for you? And doesn’t He want what is best for you? Of course—because He knows all about you, and He loves you. If He didn’t love you, it wouldn’t make any sense to seek His will—but He does love you, and we know this because of Christ. The Bible says, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also … graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). This includes His guidance for our lives.

How can you know God’s will? First, commit your life to Jesus Christ, and ask Him to help you follow Him every day. Then ask Him to help you know if it is His will for you to change jobs, and make this a matter of daily prayer. Trust Him to guide you, both by His Spirit within you and through your circumstances.

In addition, ask God to help you keep your priorities straight. Don’t just seek more money or prestige; seek the job God has for you, and where He knows you can serve Him. Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).
