Q:

I didn't come from a religious background, and in fact, I've led a pretty wild life. About a month ago, however, a Christian friend led me to Jesus, and my life is totally different now. But how can I explain this to my husband? He's very opposed to God and is even talking about leaving me.

A:

I’m very thankful you’ve come to Christ and discovered the peace and joy only He can give us. You are finding that Jesus’ promise is true: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

The most important thing I can urge you to do is to pray for your husband. Only God can make him open to the Gospel, and only God can change his heart. You can be sure that Satan will put up a fierce battle for his soul, for Satan doesn’t give up easily. But God is stronger than Satan, and even the hardest heart can be overcome by His Spirit. The Bible reminds us that God “is greater than the one who is in the world (Satan)” (1 John 4:4).

Then seek to be an example to your husband–an example of Christ’s love and joy and purity. Frankly, your conversion probably has made him feel guilty, and down inside he may be afraid you’re right and he’s wrong. But by your life you can show him that Christ is real, and Christ loves him just as He does you.

Finally, no matter what happens, never forget that Christ will never abandon you. He has promised, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). I know this is a very difficult time for you, but Christ is with you and you can trust the future into His hands. God bless you.
