Q:

My husband is serving with the military overseas, and I can't begin to tell you how difficult it's been for our children and me. How can we get through this? I pray all the time, but it's still very hard.

A:

Today our nation celebrates its Independence Day (July 4), and your letter is a vivid reminder of the sacrifices that millions of men and women have made over the years to give us our freedom—not only those serving in the military, but their families, as well. May we never take either their dedication or our freedoms for granted!

The most important thing I can tell you is that God knows all about your situation, and He wants to assure you of His love and concern. He knows your fears and your loneliness, and He also knows the struggles and practical problems you face every day as a family. And because He loves us, we can trust Him to be with us no matter what problems we face. The Bible’s words are true: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear” (Psalm 46:1-2).

How can this become a reality in your life? First, make sure of your commitment to Christ. If you have never done so, or if you are unsure of your relationship to God, ask Christ to come into your life and cleanse you from sin. Then let His promises sink into your soul every day, as you pray and turn to the Bible for comfort and strength.

In addition, don’t bear your burdens alone. Ask God to help you find others (perhaps in your church) who are facing the same situation, so you can encourage and help each other.
