Q:

Please give me some advice on how to prevent the Christmas blues. Every year, I get depressed because of all the work I have to do to get ready for Christmas, and I end up hating Christmas instead of celebrating it like I know we should.

A:

Yes, Christmas should be a time of celebration — the celebration of the coming of God’s Son into the world for our salvation. If the angels of heaven celebrated His coming, shouldn’t we celebrate it also?

In fact, during this Christmas season, let the angel’s words to the shepherds on that first Christmas night ring in your heart and mind every day. Do you remember them? “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy…. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord'” (Luke 2:10-11). Yes, Christmas is a time to celebrate!

How can you keep from getting bogged down? First, take time every day for you and your family to reflect on Jesus Christ and His love for you. He came as a baby — but grew up to become God’s appointed sacrifice for our sins by His death on the cross. And because He rose from the dead we can have hope — hope right now, and hope for eternity. Thank God every day for the greatest gift of all — the gift of His Son.

Then plan ahead. Make a list of all the things you need to do, and decide when you’ll do them. Cut out things you really don’t need to do — but add some things you should do to keep your focus on Christ, such as a musical program or special service at your church.
