Q:

My aunt says I'm running from God, but I don't agree. I'm just having a good time, and some day, if I feel like it, I'll turn to God. Why won't she stop bugging me, telling me I need Jesus and saying she's praying for me, and all that?

A:

People run from God in all kinds of ways, I’ve discovered. Some know exactly what they’re doing, deliberately rebelling against God and everything He stands for. Like the people of Ezekiel’s day, “They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people” (Ezekiel 12:2).

But others run from God without even realizing it or thinking about it — and I suspect this is your situation. Whether we’re openly rebellious or simply indifferent, we run from God when we don’t want anything to do with Him. (Nor, for that matter, do we want Him to have anything to do with us.) And for a time that may seem like it’s best, because it frees us up to indulge ourselves and live any way we wish. But the Bible gives us a sober warning: “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 16:25).

Have you ever asked yourself why your aunt is so concerned about you? It’s because she loves you and she doesn’t want you to end up hurting or even destroying yourself. Do you honestly want to risk living without her prayers? Be thankful for her love!

But most of all, be thankful for God’s love for you — a love so deep that Jesus Christ was willing to give His life for you. Face honestly your need for His forgiveness, and commit your life to Him today.
