Q:

What is heaven like? I've heard ideas about it all my life that were probably just dreamed up, but does anyone really know what we'll experience when we get there? Does the Bible give us any description?

A:

The most important truth I can tell you about heaven is that it will be far, far greater and more glorious than anything we can even begin to imagine. The Bible says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

The Bible, however, does give us some idea about heaven’s appearance. But even those descriptions are more glorious than anything we can really imagine. Take, for example, what it says about the gold that paves heaven’s main street: “The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass” (Revelation 21:21). Can you imagine gold that is also transparent, like fine crystal glassware? Not really – but it symbolizes heaven’s perfection and glory.

The most important fact about heaven, however, is that we will be with God and with Christ forever. That is its greatest glory! The Bible says, “The throne of God and of the Lamb (Christ) will be in the city, and … they will see his face” (Revelation 22:3-4). All sin and death and pain will be banished, and we will worship and serve God forever. Think of it!

Is heaven your destination when you die? Or are you unsure of your relationship with God? Don’t be in doubt, but turn to Christ in repentance and faith, and open your heart and life to Him today. Christ is our hope – and He can be yours as well.
