Q:

Where did the belief come from that Jesus might return to earth some day? I know it's a popular idea in some circles, and I even read a novel about it a few months ago. But I never heard about it in my church when I was growing up, and I've wondered where it came from.

A:

The belief that Jesus would come back to earth someday actually came from Jesus Himself. He promised that one day the whole earth “will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30). Every Christian church affirms this truth (although some may not emphasize it).

How different His second coming will be from His first! During this Christmas season, we remember how humble Jesus’ birth was: born in a stable to poor parents, who lived in an obscure village in an insignificant part of the Roman Empire. But when Christ comes again, all the earth will see His divine glory. We can’t fully imagine what that day will be like, for it will be far greater than anything we have ever experienced.

His second coming will be different also because of its purpose. When Christ came to earth slightly over 2,000 years ago, He came for one reason: to become the final and complete sacrifice for our sins by His death on the cross. But when He comes again He will establish His Kingdom of righteousness over all the earth.

Are you ready for that day? Or do you fear it, not sure if you will be saved from God’s judgment? You can be ready, by turning to Christ and trusting Him alone for your salvation. Open your heart to Christ today.
