Q:

Who in your opinion was the greatest Christian who ever lived? I've asked a lot of people that question, but there didn't seem to be any agreement. What would you say it takes to be a great Christian?

A:

My own answer would be the Apostle Paul — but God has touched the lives of countless men and women over the centuries who loved Jesus Christ and sought to serve Him with their whole being.

The vast majority of them weren’t famous or well-known — and yet in God’s eyes they were great, because they loved Him above all else. Others may have scorned them or thought they were misfits, because they didn’t follow the ways of this world or conform to its standards and goals. Instead, they sought to obey the Bible’s command: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength…. (and) Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31).

I’ve been privileged to know many people like this, often in obscure places in the world. When I was with them, I almost felt as if I were with Jesus, because they were so much like Him in their love and joy and peace. Often, they were ordinary people doing ordinary things, but they were faithfully doing what God had called them to do — as mothers, clerks, maids, teachers, and so forth.

What about you? Do others see Christ in you? Make sure of your commitment to Him, and then make it your goal to live for Him every moment of the day. The Bible says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
