Q:

Will we experience emotions in heaven, and will they be similar to what we have down here -- emotions like joy or anger? I've always wondered about this.

A:

Yes, we will experience emotions in heaven — emotions like love and joy because we are safely in God’s presence forever. The Bible says that heaven’s inhabitants declare to one another, “Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory!” (Revelation 19:7).

But some emotions we experience on earth won’t trouble us in heaven — emotions that are caused by our weakness and sin. For example, anger and bitterness and jealousy will never trouble us there — for they come from our old self-centered nature, and it will be changed. Nor will we experience emotions like fear, worry, or anxiety, for in heaven we’ll be completely safe and beyond the reach of anything harmful. The Bible says, “They will live in safety, and no one will make them afraid” (Ezekiel 34:28).

The real issue, however, is this: How should we live right now? Will we allow emotions like anger and hatred and doubt to control us? Or will we allow heaven’s peace to rule in our hearts — a peace so strong that it keeps emotions like anger and bitterness away? To put it another way, wouldn’t our lives be better if we could only banish emotions that destroy us? Of course they would.

But is this possible? Yes — when we put our lives into Christ’s hands, and allow Him to fill us with His Spirit. The Bible says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). By faith open your heart to Christ’s transforming power today.
