Q:

Years ago, I decided I didn't want anything to do with God, but now I'm facing some serious health issues and I know I made a mistake. You'll probably say it's not too late to turn to God, but I have a hard time believing it. Why should I?

A:

If God treated us the way we usually treat each other, then you’d be right to wonder if He’d ever forgive us. After all, we usually treat people the same way they treat us — and if they treat us badly, we aren’t likely to forgive them.

But God isn’t like this! God loves us, and even when we reject Him or even hate Him, He still loves us. This doesn’t mean He is indifferent to our wrongdoing or doesn’t care what we do — because He does. Nor does it mean we won’t pay a price for our wrongdoing — because we will, both now and in eternity. The Bible’s words are true: “You may be sure that your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).

But God still loves us, in spite of our sin, has promised to forgive us if we sincerely turn to Him in repentance and faith. How do we know this is true? We know it because Jesus Christ gave His life for us. Would Christ have died for your sins if God didn’t want to forgive you? Of course not.

Don’t carry this burden any longer, but tell God you’re sorry for the way you’ve rebelled against Him, and by faith ask Christ to come into your life. You can trust God’s promise: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
