As world leaders gathered for the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Alberta—so did protestors. From June 15-17, hundreds of people rallied for many causes at designated demonstration zones in Calgary and Banff.
Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (BG-RRT) chaplains deployed to provide a ministry of presence and prayer and encourage people spiritually in Jesus’ Name.
One young man at a protest site in Calgary, Thomas*, was struggling with the sudden loss of his sister to a drug overdose. Seeing one of the chaplains nearby, he came over, simply needing to talk. As they spoke, Thomas opened up about his grief and feeling lost, especially as he was struggling with his faith and trust in God. When our chaplain asked if she could pray with him, he agreed. She proceeded to pray God’s peace, guidance, and presence to fill him Thomas as he worked through his grief. “Thank you for your prayers,” he expressed. As Thomas left, his more open smile was a sign that some weight had been lifted from his heart.
The protests will continue throughout the G7 Summit and be broadcast live for the leaders in Kananaskis, located in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. At one point when tensions rose to a new height, our chaplains quietly prayed for peace and calm to be restored. A definite ease settled over the crowds in a clear answer to this prayer.
Our chaplains also had opportunities to connect with and encourage the law enforcement officers watching over the protests.
Please pray for our chaplains as they continue to offer a ministry of presence during these protests and for law enforcement as they help maintain peace.
